Sundae at the diner

Today’s post is brought to you by the smell of burgers and fries and the sound of rock and roll because it’s coming to you straight from the Jukebox Diner in Hamilton! The diner is right next door to the Classics Museum where we shot the Monica dress from Pinup Girl Clothing (see the full post here) and this second look couldn’t be more different!

It was so hard to narrow down the perfect diner outfit, but in the end I chose to style the Veronique dress in Sundae print from Bernie Dexter. It’s sold out on her website but you can get the same style in Winter Wonderland print, or you might snag one on eBay which is where I got mine. The print on this dress is so cute and, as it involves food, looks right at home at the diner. I matched all red accessories to pick out the cherries in the sundaes, and the diner decor!

The Veronique dress is 100% cotton and features a pleated full skirt, a sweetheart neckline, and (every girl’s best friend) pockets! The skirt falls to just below my knees and takes a Banned Apparel on the shortest length, which is about 22″. I usually wear an XS from Bernie Dexter but I ended up with a size S in this style due to an eBay mix up – this ended up being the only size left and Bernie kindly offered me another dress but I took a chance as I was so in love with this print. It actually fits really well; the only ‘too big’ thing was the shoulders which I easily sewed up by a couple of centimetres, but note that this is something I’ve had to do with all my non-strappy Bernie dresses so far and certainly not a major issue. And how about that print?! I’m certainly looking forward to breaking this dress out more over summer!

Bernie Dexter dresses generally retail from $156USD on her website which can be quite pricey – even for a quirky print! But if you’re lusting after these beauties and they’re out of your budget, here’s a few tips for snagging them at a friendlier price:

    • Sign up to the Bernie Dexter mailing list for regular discount codes. There’s usually one either a ‘dress25′ or ’25dress’ code active which gives you 25% off.
    • Look out for other retailers that stock Bernie Dexter, such as Unique Vintage, and keep an eye out for discounts on offer, especially around public holidays and end of season sales which generally come with larger discounts
    •  Stalk eBay! Bernie herself sells many end of line and sample dresses with heavy discounts, and your fellow fashionistas may also have Bernies for sale.

A huge thank you to Katherine of The Undefined Photography for making the drive down to Hamilton with me for this super fun shoot! As always, you can check Katherine’s photography out here, and you can see her personal style blog – The Wardrobe – here. And thank you to the staff of the Jukebox Diner for letting us shoot at their place and making us milkshakes after closing time!

  1. Omg stop – I can’t handle this perfection!! “brought to you by burgers and fries…” HAHA! I might have snort-laughed at that! You look amazing and what a PERFECT backdrop for this dress. I, too, am big on snagging Bernie’s for cheaper. So many of mine came from her eBay or the Bernie Collective on Facebook – a buy/sell/swap group. I hate spending full price but your tips are really good ones!
